Sparc is a project commissioned by the University of California San Diego. In May 2021, a research team at the university asked us to find and implement a concept to more easily manage the university's set of databases. The complexity was to merge different databases while clearly distinguishing them. After several attempts and several weeks of user research, the solution found was to create a visual canvas presenting the data tree. Thus, each panel presents one or several databases. A classic tree structure is also present on the left.
There has been a lot of research on tab management associated with database management. The idea was to start with one database per tab. So each new database import opens a new tab. But then it is possible to merge the visualization of several databases into one tab so that you can see their different meeting points. Indeed, a specific folder or file can be linked to several databases.
